Five minutes of sun this AM, snow across the highway!

OK.  Yesterday was a red letter day.  The puppies started opening their eyes, attempted to play with each other and are sleeping much longer allowing their hard-working mum to spend a bit of time on the floor and outside instead of always with them!
Imagine how cute, seeing the two little ones mouthing each other yesterday, the beginning of play.  Actually, about three days ago, I heard one of them "growling," which at this stage sounds kind of like a gravely cricket chirp.  Too cute.
Darby, who else?, was the first to have the slits show letting the sparkle show from her eyes.  Dano/Blarney is the second, Boyle the last.  All are doing well.
The pictures I took of heads are not coming up when I search for them for the blog.  (Did I ever tell you that computers HATE me, and I them?)  I will take more pictures today and try to get them up soon.  Frustration!!!
I do get up at night now, but only if I hear someone in distress and seldom now.  The distress is usually that they are behind their mother instead of on the side where the milk is dispensed!  Whew!!!  I was getting very tired.  No rest for the wicked, right?!!
OK, wish for pictures, but don't hold your breath!!!
Best,
The Old Curmudgeon

March 26, 2012 Rainy day

The weekend was fantastic, sun, warm, got to put some bulbs in the ground.  Smelled puppy breath and rejoiced in the kids gaining weight steadily.  On Sunday, after I gave Kat her food, I went by the pen and there was a puppy with its head in her mom's bowl!!!  I panicked because I wet the food and am always afraid that puppies will inhale food and stop up their noses!!!  This puppy had its head buried in the food.  Guess who!  Ms. Darby, the Gun Ho Girl!!!  Very cute too.  She didn't want me to take her out of the food.  So, I stood there while I held her on a milk spigot.  She didn't mind that and Kat was busy standing up eating!!!
Weights this AM..... Dano- TaDa.....  1# 1oz.
                               Mab-  15 1/8 oz.
                               Darby- 11 3/8 oz.
                               Boyle- 10 5/8 oz.
So, as you see, they are doing well, gaining, swimming around after mom more, squeaking more and more, but less and less at night.  (Thank goodness!)
Pictures later, today or tomorrow.  I want to get someone to hold them up for me while I take the pictures....  I forgot to bring the HEAVY camera to work where there are actually people to hold them up for me.  Silly Wabbit!

Took pictures with the help of Ms. Red, Jeanette, and they appear on the computer screen, but when I try to get the blog to find them, it won't.  Maybe tomorrow, meanwhile, I will take more pictures.  Lori, my office manager, may well be in tomorrow.  She can find them!!!
These were head pictures.  Nice heads.
Did I ever tell you that computers hate me?  They do!!!!  I am pretty frustrated with them sometimes too!!!

March 22, 2012 A sunny day, at least at the beginning!

I will report weights today.  One the day they were born, the pups weighed:  Dano-6 7/8 oz., Mab-6 3/4 oz., Darby-5 3/4 oz., and Boyle-3 5/8 oz.  This AM weights:  Dano-12 3/4 oz, Mab-11 3/4 oz, Darby-8 oz, and Boyle-7 oz.  Most have almost doubled in weight.  Whew!  The two big bulldozers are hard on the little ones, knocking them off the nipples quite handily.  I am the policeman and am quite impressed with the finesse the big ones use to nose in on the little ones.  I feel it on my hands which are making a cage around the little ones.  Interesting.
The little ones get a dab here and a dab there of Nutrical or smooth peanut butter.  Not often and not a lot, but maybe a dollop that will help them to live and thrive.  I'm not as worried any longer, but feel "needed" and continue to shield the little ones from the bulldozers!

Hard to tell the difference in sizes in these photos.  Maybe when I get the pictures all straightened out it will be more obvious.  The dark one on the left in the last photo is Dano and the one with the lighter head next to him is Mab.  Boyle is to the right of Darby here.
More soon.  Still getting up in the night.

FINALLY, our litter!!!!

Friday, March 16th, the day before St. Patrick's Day, we had our first litter in exactly nine months!!!!
Kat and Beau announce two boys and two girls, all grizzles!  One boy, Boyle, is TINY and I am getting up every two hours all night to make sure he gets enough to eat!  He IS gaining.  His next biggest sister is also small, about half the size of the two biggest, but not as small as Boyle.  Her name is Darby, which can be a girl's name or a boy's name.  My daughter picked that name and likes it best.  Darby is a spunky little girl.  We like that.  She doesn't need me fending for her!
They all have Irish names for St. Paddy's Day.  The two big kids are Mab, in honor of the Queen of the Fairies and Dano or Blarney in honor of my grandson, Blarney Stone Ian!  Haven't decided on the final name for him yet.  Right now I call him both and that may continue!!!
I'll put up some pictures tomorrow, just to show you how cute they are and how small Boyle is.
Kat is doing well with this, her last litter.  She will go into grandmotherhood and teach all the other puppies that ever come along how to be good dog citizens.  She is the best "mother" ever, to hers and everyone elses' litters!!!!

Just a refresher, the Nov. and Jan. litters from 2010 and 2011 did extremely well at the National Specialty with ribbons for them all and Norman, Elwha's Little Rascal, taking the boy points and being invited to Crufts.  He did go to Crufts and did nothing there, not being the type that the judge breeds and likes, but having fun.  Star Ott showed him to perfection and he is one sweet boy.  Crufts was fun, if a bit overwhelming.  895 vendors!!!!  Couldn't find the one thing I was looking to buy for Heather, a BT to go onto a car grill.  People had heard of them, but how could a person find them in that sea of tents?!!!!  The people there were nice and there were some dynamite dogs to be seen.  Wow!!!!  I am going back next year too!!!

Will try to post often, if not daily.  Thanks for asking after them.  Sweet babies.
