Curmudgeon blows it!!!

I forgot to bring the camera to work today to take all those zillions of pictures I took over the weekend off and put some onto the blog!!!  Duh!
The babies are growing up, as per schedule.  We did spend quite a few hours outside this weekend and I put up more cover so that I would feel more secure that the raptors wouldn't descent on us and take home lunch.  Tomorrow, when they go on sale, I'm ordering a few that won't disintegrate in the sun, wind and rain. They will let light through, but stay standing.  I may hate it when it lets the grass dry out, but maybe not.  I'll deal with it when that time comes.  I can't stand it the way it is now.  We did have a hawk fly over this weekend, but nothing like the eagle!!!
I put all of their play equipment out and they are climbing things, sliding down things, going through multiple tunnels, going into holes at the base of the cherry tree and getting into all kinds of mischief.  Great puppies.  They also will sit in my lap or anyone else's lap for as long as anyone will sit on the floor with them.  Snuggle bug city.
They are supposed to be wormed at six, eight, ten and twelve weeks, so Sat. we started.  Panacur, three days in a row.  They LOVE the cat food morsel with which I mixed it.  They each have inhaled their morsels, both days so far.  Now they don't want their dog food, just mom's milk and cat food.  They are only in luck on one of those and are still doing fine.  I just think that maybe they don't like the new dog food.  We'll see.
They are experiencing the cats, one at a time, and they have walked on cement, gravel, dirt, wood, and of course, grass.  They don't seem to mind any surface.  I am teaching each one to walk beside me and I feed them every few steps as they walk with me.  It will be EASY to transition them to heeling with that in their minds.
We did have visitors this weekend and they were able to visit new people and dogs.  Next weekend they will stay with Bonnie, Betty and Skip while I take Zinger and my dogs to a handling seminar in Canada. It will be good for them to have yet another change of scenery!
They continue to sniff out the treats in the kitchen on all of the apparatus that move.  They LOVE that game and sniff audibly the entire time.  Of course they love the Natural Balance doggie sausage bits and pieces that I use for treats.
Better get busy!

Six weeks old tomorrow

Yesterday Pip and I did our first nosework class.  We had fun, especially Pip.  I think that she is a natural.
We went home and I sat on the floor with the babies.  I put treats all around the room and watched those little boogers use their noses and find them all.  I could hear them even across the room sniffing/snuffling/hunting.  It was precious.  They were darn good too!!!  Trackers in the making!!!!
Can you believe that they will be six weeks old tomorrow?  I can't.  Where does the time go?  I'm getting old!  That's what I always think when I see time whizzing by.
Danny Boy took a walk with the big guys today at lunch time.  If I have one at a time and the little one stays with the big ones, even UNDER the big dogs, then I don't worry so much about the eagles and the hawks.  I had one hawk one time dive bomb me when one puppy was walking beside me IN MY FRONT YARD, but when he brushed the side of my face with his wing, he veered off.  I would have jumped on him if he had tried to execute, but it was an eye opener too, no pun intended.  That one was pretty amazing because the bird touched me, but it wasn't an eagle.  That is why I only take one at a time out for walks and then I HOVER.  We live in the wilderness.
Some much for sniffing.
Curmudgeonly yours,
c

Scary Sunday!!!!

Don't you hate it when nightmares come true?  I do.
Over the weekend I planned to take the pups out as often as possible and we were doing a darn good job of it too!  Sunday on our second trip out I was set to take pictures because they were coming to my whistle so perfectly and it was the cutest thing in the world.  Forgot the camera the first time out.  Boogers!
We were out all of two minutes and I was trying to capture the little rats on film running at me and saw a shadow go over me.  I looked up and a bald eagle was RIGHT THERE!!!!  I scooped up the bunch and headed into the house in record time after I yelled at the eagle to stay away!  Scary in spades!  That ruined my day and my plans and my picture taking, big time!
After that we went into the north yard and stayed under the hedge or out in the front yard in the little run I have that I have covered with fence slats.  I sit in it, but it isn't long enough to have them run to me and I can only sit.  Even in the north yard I am constantly watching the sky.  It was hard enough trying to take pictures and watch THEM without having to watch the sky too.  No more pictures except in the pen, sitting down.
I am going to order some gazebo things that Costco has coming on sale and put them up side by side in that south yard and reclaim it for the puppies, no eagles allowed!  The structures have a see-through roof, i.e. not dark, and they are big enough we can have fun out there, they won't rot like the other things I've hung up out there in the past and I can stand up in them!  All good things.  That eagle was CLOSE, too close for comfort!  Scared the living daylights out of me.  MYYYYYYY babies!!!!!!

They are cute.  They come running whenever I'm near and have started chewing on my toes.  (No, that isn't cute!)  Mr. Boyle is the one who demands I come around if he can see me doing charts at the table, for instance.  He is already spoiled and LOVES to be held.  He cuddles right in!!!  They all climb on anything and everything and are not afraid of much.  We went out in back on Friday and they spent time with all four of the kitty boys.  Kidd, the oldest and dog wisest, loves puppies and wove in and out among them.  They were a bit taken aback at first, but adapted fairly rapidly.  I carry one or the other out usually when I go out to put the cats in their cat house at night and they get a rub from Kidd usually.
It is frightening how fast they grow up.  I have some new books with new things to try.  We'll see how the old curmudgeon does!
More soon,

I didn't really see that, did I?!!!!!!!

This morning, while I was getting ready to come to work with the pups and tribe, I stopped dead in my tracks as I saw Danny Boy LIFTING HIS LEG on one of the wobble pillows.  Now, was he walking across it and just happened to be stepping off with only one back leg left on it when the urge hit, or was it deliberate?  I have no idea, but I have NEVER seen an almost five week old puppy do that!  Blew me away!  Rascal!  It was probably just a mistake and not real, but one does wonder.
They have changed in their looks in the last few days.  Their back skulls are widening and it became noticeable this week.  I have taken pictures and am waiting for my office manager to get here and take them off the camera so that I can put them on the blog.  Fingers crossed, as usual.

Rainy and cold, so we didn't get out yesterday.  Not so good today either.  Dark and rainy.  Good for the flowers though!!!!!  Line drying is difficult, but the clothes dry on the drying racks on the porch.
The kids are just delighting me with how willing they are to play on the equipment in the kitchen.  They love to climb and play on it and are trying to all pile on the moving toys at once.  Pretty amazing.  They love to explore and I keep trying to stay ahead of them by finding more and more things for them to try.
The dogs will stay at the office all day tomorrow without me.  I get to go to a nose discrimination seminar at Legacy Canine given by some expert from back east.  (In medical school they used to tell us an expert was someone who came from the east with slides in a briefcase.)  I am wondering what he will be like, but, from what Susan says about him, he is an amazing lecturer.  His course has been sold out for a LONG time and she had to beg to get in for just the first half.  I am excited.  I read a book and have been practicing scenting with Kat, Touille, Pip and Ono.  They love it!!!  We start a class on Wednesday next week.  Hopefully I haven't ruined them by doing it out of a book!
More later since I can now put pictures on the computer!  Lori fixed it.  It had been corrupted somehow.  (Probably something I did, she says.  Could that possibly be!!!!??!)

April 18 One month and two days old!

I took some pictures today and over the last couple of days.  The computer loaded four and one half pictures before deciding it could do no more, that something was wrong.  Oh well.  I will load them and then take the "card" to the other computer and try again.  I'm baffled.  This computer must have gotten corrupted by that first, new, whoop-de-do card from the UK.  That's the way it goes.  BUT, you didn't want to read about that!!!!  You want to read about PUPPIES!!!
These guys are amazing.  They become more and more confident each day and are playing on the agility equipment preferably.  The little dragonfly teeter is one of their favorites, they even get into the rocking chair, they are batting around the macadamia nuts scattered on the floor playing soccer, seeing how many can get on the rocker pillow at once and trying two at a time on the skateboard.

We have visitors this week, a lady and her puppy from eastern Washington.  The puppy is a thirteen week old Berger Picard, and she, Sunny, is a hoot!  The baby puppies have not met the BP, but watch her through the kitchen half door.  They are fascinated.  Susan has been taking videos of the babies on their equipment that I will post as soon as she gives them to me!  I want you to see how advanced and fearless these guys are!!!
The kids are eating real food, softened and mashed up.  I don't know why I mash it up though.  They step on it and compact it at the bottom of the bowl all the time and I fluff it up and they love that.  Then they compact it again.  Silly wabbits!
Danny Boy has the darkest face and head.  Mab is the growliest, but she licks me as she growls and hurries to me when I get to the kitchen.  She gets there the fastest.  Boyle is the cuddliest still, and the fluffiest.  Darby is probably, at least at this point, the most independent.  Having said that, I will tell you that they switch around in their personality traits.  It is an amazing thing to watch.
Boyle and Darby are still noticeably smaller than the other two, but are progressing in size at the same rate as the other two, so stay in place!
Nice day today, so if it holds, when we get home they can go outside in the yard.  The past two days have been wet and cold.  Too cold for tiny babies, and they are still awfully small.
The Curmudgeon must get to work.
Later.

Rainy day today

The weekend was fun.  The puppies started their "daylight life" in the kitchen on Friday.  They have tons of equipment on which to play, wobble boards, balls, skateboard, squeaky toys, etc.  They love it.

The first day they learned to walk on the slippery wood floor, then the second day they attacked each other, climbed on things, shook their fuzzy toys to try to kill them, etc.  They LOVE it!!!!

On Saturday, Betty and Skip visited to hold babies.  They are addicted, as I am!

I had forgotten the camera here at work, so took no pictures over the weekend.  I wished for it a couple of times when we were outside in the grass.  Mostly the grass was at least twice as long as they are tall.  I lay down and they played with my nose, etc.

Last night we had a new person and puppy come visit, a friend from Yakima with her new Berger Picard, pronounced (kind of) bear-jear pee-car.  Thirteen week old, 25 lb. baby girl, way bigger than my biggest BT.  Funny and sweet.  She and Pip and Ono ran around the front yard enough to tire someone, me?, out.  Susan is out there the entire time during which she is picking up dog poop, so the yard will be nice and clean by the time she leaves Thursday.  They are here for "chicken clicking" at Legacy Canine with Terry Ryan.  What fun!!!

Touille came home on Saturday.  Fingers crossed for some nice puppies!!!

We had some nice weather over the weekend.  Dried lots of clothes on the clothesline.  Sunday about noon the wind came up and it was cold after that.  The nice sun was the only thing making it warm.

Top picture is Mr. Danny Boy, second picture is Boyle, third is, of course, mom and all the kids tanking up, fourth is Ms. Mab, and fifth, last but not least, Darby.  Don't know why they decided to stick their tongues out this time, but they did!

They are extremely playful now, sweet and kissy, all of them and adventuresome, learning all the time!

Rascals all!

The babes are all cuddly now and all kiss, some better than others.
Skip put the old pictures onto one of the storage devices and I downloaded them to the computer.  Let's see it some of them will go onto the blog!!!
OK.  No go.  Put them on the computer, but cannot find them.  Failure as a techie!!!
I'll see what I can do on Tuesday when the office manager comes back....
Sorry,
Curmudgeon time!

Happy Spring/Easter/Sun!!!

OK.  The babies are three weeks and three days old.  Sweet little buggers.  Boyle has won my heart, big time.  He licks my nose and snuggles the best.  Danny Boy is a big baby and loves to be held too, just hasn't started the kissing yet.
The girls are a bit more independent, as girls are, but are being held lots to train them to like it.  Mab went out, in my arms, to the front gate this morning to help me open it.  She thought it as cold out!  It was.
They went out into the side yard yesterday and squeaked a bit, walked around a very little bit, then found the bag in which I had taken them out and crawled into it to be in the dark, and safe, place.
I do think that the grass in the pen may be teaching them to eliminate in grass.  Fingers crossed.  Modifying the process as I think of better things to do and ways to do them.  We will be outside a LOT from now on, if it stays this nice.  Saturday was dry and so was yesterday.  That meant that I could get out on my lawnmower and mow the parts of the lawn where some idiot, me, HADN'T planted daffodils.  I have trouble finding the dogs when the grass gets too high.  I don't want to cut the grass that has the pretty flowers in it!  Silly wabbit!  I got most of the lawns mowed and it feels better or more manicured and there is now a place to put the babies where I can watch them and they aren't totally lost in the tall stuff.
No teeth yet, but I can feel them under the surface of the gums.  The puppies are stealing more and more of Kat's food.  It is cute to see them with food on their faces.  I am softening a bit of food for them now and then and letting them at it when Kat isn't around because she doesn't like to share.  She just eats it faster than otherwise.  Doesn't growl or anything.  She does need it all so that she can make all the milk she needs to make for them.
My camera is still not working with this computer.  I took pictures yesterday and put the card in the computer this AM.  It won't transfer them.  I'll put on some of the ones Skip took off my card, but I need to find out what is wrong.  Camera incompatible with computer.  Or, Charlotte incompatible with computer?!?  Maybe the un-formatted card did something to the computer that damaged it?  Whatever, it is a pain in the neck!
Check out this link!  Betty took a video Saturday of the crew as they were getting ready to crash!  Skip put it on You Tube.
http://youtu.be/cDyULXhrl5Y
You can hear the cute? noise they make when they are growling at this very young age.  They were growling at some of the dogs outside of their pen, the ones on the floor, two of whom they had never seen before.
OK.  Time to get some work done.  More soon,
The Old Curmudgeon

April 3, 2012

The babies are fat, as am I.  They should be, I shouldn't!!!
Betty and Skip, Kathleen and Kate will be here over the weekend to help with the picture problem.  Fingers crossed.  I am sure that they will somehow figure it out.
I bought a new, very techie storage card to go into the camera when I was in England for Crufts.  After I put that into the camera, the computer has never taken another picture from ANY of the storage cards I've put into the camera since, despite the fact that I emptied them, etc.  Beats me!
The babies are more and more alert every day.  I put a bunch of toys into the work pen and when I put them into the pen today, they immediately headed for the new sights to explore.  I will change the toys daily so that they always have new things to explore.  They like that!
I cannot seem to get onto the AKC site to register them.  Computers again!!!  Have calls into AKC to remedy that.  I'm sure that it is my fault, but who knows.  Maybe I can blame it on the foreign storage card too!!!!
More later,
c

April 2, 2012, NOT April 1, 2012!

Still no solution to the picture problem except by taking pictures on my iPad and sending them out to whomever has shown an interest to have them.  If you want to be included, let me know and I will add your name to the picture list.
The rascals continue to eat and sleep!!!  Doing just the right things because they are growing up!!!  They now focus on me and sometimes scream!  "What is this thing trying to eat me?!!!!"  I quickly give them to their mother when they do that and let them EAT and maybe that will encourage them to know I am their friend and reward their being alive.  Hopefully it won't reward the terror they feel when they see these eyes looking at them and the mouth beneath the eyes.  I rub their tummies too and that often calms them down.  It won't take long, but it IS a work in progress, every minute!!!
I have been getting them ready for their world down the road by clicking them when they are feasting off Mom.  The click does not seem to bother them.  It will become a reward in itself for them in the future whether it is used later on or not.
They are trying to get up on their feet and walk now.  Too cute, as you can imagine.  They do still try to play with each other by mouthing, the beginning of play.
They ARE cute.
Day is done.  More soon,
Charlotte
